Animal Kingdom

Year R had so much fun with our Animal Kingdom topic in spring 2.

We got to learn so many interesting facts and were lucky enough to go on an exciting trip as well as have visitors come to our school, where we got to see, touch and learn about lots of different animals.

Our first visitors were from Blue Reef Aquarium.
We had some rock pool creatures brought to our school, which we got to touch and learn lots of facts about. We talked after the visit about all the facts that we learnt before writing down the facts about one of the creatures.

The creatures we saw were:

A Spider Crab

We learnt a spider crab is one of the only crabs that can move forwards and backwards and not just side to side.

Its shell helped it to blend in with the rocks.

Crabs have 8 legs and 2 pincers.

We also got to look at a Shore Crab.

The shore crab we saw was a boy. We learnt that male shore crabs had a rocket shaped marking on its tummy where as females had a pouch where it holds babies.

The other creature we got to learn about was a star fish.

The star fish had hard bumps over its soft, jelly like skin, we loved feeling the different parts. We had to be careful not to touch the eyes though. We learnt jelly fish have an eye at the end of each of it's legs and they can have over 20 legs.

We also learnt that they have two stomachs and if they eat something they don't like they will remove one of their stomachs and grow a new one.

We learnt many other facts about these rock pool sea creatures too and loved showing off our work full of all these interesting facts!

Next we had our very exciting school trip to the farm.
It was our first school trip so it was very exciting to go on a coach and be out of school for the day, and we got to learn lots too.

We fed lots of the animals, held and stroked them and even milked a cow.

We learnt lots of facts about the dairy cow including what they do with the milk and what it can be used to make.

After our trip to the farm we made fact files to share all of the interesting facts we learnt about the animals we saw on the farm.

Lastly we also had another visit from Bitterne Reptile Centre, where we got to see, learn about about touch a tarantula, lizard, a bullfrog and 3 different types of snakes.

Before our visitors arrived we thought of questions about the creatures that we wanted to find the answers to and then wrote the answers after we found them out.

We were very lucky to have so much fun learning about all these different animals as well as lots of other animals around the world. We learnt about where the animals would live if they were wild and that animals aren't just found on farms, at zoos or sea life centres, or even as pets at home.
We would like to thank everyone who helped with our topic.
