Frogs- Grounds Week Day 4

Today we went up to the woods and when we got there we made a den for the three little pigs. We collected lots of natural materials to help us. We found some sticks and leaves and used string to hold it altogether.

We worked as a team to build our dens.

We had lots of fun but got very messy!

Frog's Grounds Week Day 2 and 3

 Yesterday we were leaf detectives! We found lots of leaves and we looked at them closely. We identified which trees they were from.  We found leaves from oak, sycamore, birch, ash and rowan trees. In the afternoon we did some leave rubbings and sketching. We found out that leaves have veins.

 Today, we learnt about how animals hibernate during the winter. We played a game where we had to 'squirral' acorns away for the winter... then we had to find them again!

 To help feed the birds during the winter, we made bird feeders to hang in the school grounds. We mixed up lard, nuts and seeds. Then we spooned the mixture into a plastic bottle. Look out for them around school!

Frog's Grounds Week - Day 1

Yesterday we went on a weather walk to look for signs of autumn. We had to use all of our senses. We saw dew glistening on a cobweb. We could feel the cold, crisp air on our faces. We could smell the squishy mud and we could hear the leaves crunching under our feet.

When we came back to class we sketched what we saw. Then we wrote about what we saw.

Frog's Science Experiment

 

This week we have been marooned on a desert island! Our challenge was to make a shelter that is waterproof, windproof and strong.

First we explored lots of different materials.

 Then we built our shelters. We had to work as a team. It was difficult to make the shelters stand up but we perserved!

 Then it was time to test our shelters. We planned how we were going to test it.

We talked about how to make it fair.



This is how we tested if the shelter was waterproof.

 This is how we tested if it was windproof. We are going to leave our shelters overnight to see if they are strong. We will check in the morning.

 The leaf shelter was not waterproof because it had holes in it. Poor Robbie the Rabbit got wet!!! Mrs Llewellyn was very sad.

 

YEAR ONE WORLD FOOD MARKET

Wow! What a busy day Frogs and Newts have had, preparing and running their own World Food Market!

 Parents, Nans, Grandads and Grannys came from far and wide to sample the wonderful food on offer!

 The children were challenged to sell their food by advertising, promoting and giving good customer service!

 The children were so successful that some stalls sold out really quickly!

 Parents gathered in the market place to eat and chat!

 Thank you for all your enthusiasm and kind donations - which will all go to Friends of Moorlands!

Frog's 100 marble treat!

 

 

For their marble treat, Frogs decided to have a teddy bear's picnic! They had a brilliant afternoon!

Thanks to parents for providing snacks! They had jaffa cakes, ginger biscuits and doughtnuts! It was fantastic!

Grounds Week Day 2 - Frog's Blog

It has been a very muddy, wet day! It's a good job we had our wellies on!

Yesterday, we left a tray of water outside to see what would happen. It froze into ice overnight. We touched it and watched it melt when it was indoors in the warm.

It felt freezing cold! It began to melt because our hands were warm. We have planned a science investigation to find out where ice will melt the quickest! We will let you know our results...


We have been learning about the artist, Andy Goldsworthy. He is an environmental artist and uses natural items in his art work. We collected rocks, leaves, twigs, sticks and stones to make our own artwork. We will post pictures when we have finished them!

Grounds Week Day 1 – Frog’s Blog

Today we went on a weather walk to look for signs of winter. We noticed that the trees are bare. It was a very cold day so before we went outside we ate some porridge to warm ourselves up.We noticed a tree with green still on it. We learnt that this is called an evergreen tree. An evergreen stays green all year round.

During autumn, we made bird feeders to keep the birds fed during winter. When we saw them today, they were empty. We are going to refill them for the birds.

Year One Sealife Visitors

Year One were lucky to have Alison from the Sealife Centre visit their class. Alison brought some creatures that you could find in a rock pool. The children loved learning about these creatures and were brave enough to touch some of them.

We found out that Starfish have 500 - 1000 legs!

We were all brave and touched Gavin the Spider Crab! Would you?
